At worst, the consequences have even been fatal.
As evidenced by the stories of Jessica Madison and Alexander E. Kearns, debt overwhelm can have tragic outcomes.
Jessica Madison

Though only a fraction of what many other graduates borrow to attend school, Jessica Madison's $21K in student loans were still more than enough to subject her to a number of detriments, including car repossession, wage garnishment and delayed wedding plans. Ultimately, the debt placed such a strain on her ability to adequately tend to her medical needs, she passed away from cancer, which had for the above reasons gone undetected until after it was too late. Learn more about her story here and here.
Alexander E. Kearns

In June 2020, 20-year-old college student Alexander E. Kearns, who in months prior began using a trading app to learn the stock market, died by suicide after discovering what appeared to be a $730,000 negative balance reflected in his account, which he believed he owed and was responsible for repaying. Although that figure ultimately did not represent an actual debt he had accrued, the perceived financial threat—and a lack of timely support—contributed to his despair and heartbreaking decision. Learn more about his story here.
And not to mention, the countless others who've suffered needlessly and passed away prematurely due to similar circumstances.
